XMP can be used for a broad set of purposes. Adobe has a set of defined
schema that cover media management (names of asset management systems,
version IDs, file provenance, rendition class names, etc.); rights
management; and workflow/job ticket. As Stephen points out, there are
also defined schemas for EXIF technical metadata; all these are detailed
in the XMP spec. The extensibility of XMP also means it can, in theory,
be used for any kind of metadata we can think of. Adobe is also
interested in pushing for XMP to be embedded in other kinds of files
apart from PDF. Formats they specifically mention are TIFF,
JPEG/JPEG2000, GIF, PNG, and XML/HTML. I think it might ultimately be
possible (maybe already is) to embed XMP into other kinds of files, such
as MS Office formats.

Bill Lefugy raises a good point about PDF/A and XMP's use of RDF for
metadata... not having read the XMP specs in any detail, does anyone
know
what sort of metadata XMP will really include? Descriptive I know, and
rights, but also technical? I'm wondering if XMP metadata would always
fit
nicely in our dmdSec metadata bucket, or it if would actually span
several
of the METS metadata categories.
