MacKenzie:
In some sense, XMP provides a metadata framework not unlike METS into which
any RDF-compatible content, not necessarily restricted to metadata, can be
placed. That being said XMP does define a set of "core" schemas, including
DC, that define properties useful for descriptive, administrative,
provenance, and (minimal) rights metadata. The only technical metadata is
provided by the EXIF schema that is appropriate only for raster still
images. (EXIF 2.2 is a Japanese standard similar to TIFF/EP, ISO
12234-2.) The EXIF schema is somewhat similar to the MIX schema for the
NISO Z39.87 data dictionary.
XMP also defines a set of recommended, though not required practices for
using user-defined extension schemas. See
<http://partners.adobe.com/asn/developer/xmp/pdf/xmpspecification.pdf> for
more details.
