Dear Kate and others,
Kate described it well, except that there is not a one to one correspondence
between the series and appendices -- some series don't have them; some do:
So the generic format is more likely to be:
Descriptive Summary
Administrative information
Agency History
Scope and Content
Arrangement/Description
Description of Subordinate Components
Series I
Series II
Series III
Series IV
Appendices:
Appendix for Series II
Appendix for Series IV
The suggestion to use the "ODD" encoding element was helpful, but I'm still
wondering if there isn't a solution that is closer to "Best Practices"
within EAD and within Description standards generally. I did not develop
this style for the finding aids, but I could make the case for a change, if
others thought that the problem is not within EAD, but with our style.
Thanks for your thoughts and help,
Lucy

Subject: Re: Encoding Appendices
I don't quite understand the current practice: are you saying that your
box lists, folder lists, descriptions of documents, etc. is in an appendix,
separate from the series description?
Generically:
Descriptive Summary
Administrative information
Agency History
Scope and Content
Arrangement/Description
Description of Subordinate Components
Series I
Series II
Series III
Appendix:
Lists for Series I
Lists for Series II
Lists for Seriers III
