Hello All,
I grew up in Xenia, Ohio and decided to see what might be in the
American Memory collections. To my amazement I found several articles from
the Xenia Torchlight in the Cleveland Gazette about a case McCullom vs.
Xenia Board of Education that happened in 1887 where a black girl wanted
admission to a white school. Judge Hawes gave a decision in favor of mixed
schools but withdrew from the race for re-election "because the sentiment
of prejudice was so great." Read the articles for more details. I thought
this was fascinating in light of the anniversary of Brown vs. the Board of
Education.
Search using the word Xenia.
