As far as I know, SGML is not supported by any commonly available web browser.
However, XML is supported by Internet Explorer, versions 6 and higher,
Netscape, version 7 and higher, Mozilla, and probably others. From what I
can tell, a reasonably reliable statistic is that at least 75% of browsers
currently in use are XML-aware. Since the majority of people are using one
of the above browsers, for the majority, the server-side software you refer
to is no longer necessary.
