Bruce, the numbering that you refer to that I sent in before is probably
the numbering used in the SICI (NISO Z39.56). It assigns:

21=spring
22=summer
23=fall
24=winter

and

31=1st Q
32=2nd Q
33=3rd Q
34=4th Q

The same numbering for months is used in the MARC holdings format.

You can retain the "textual" month names (spring, etc.) if you aren't
expecting to order the items based on this date field. One of the main
reasons for using the numerics is that you get into language issues:
i.e. you can have "spring," "primavera" and "printemps." The numeric
designation gets you around that for certain functions.
