During the JAC discussion that was initiated on 2004-04-05 there has been a
couple of voices opposing the inclusion in the alpha-2 table, but none to
the inclusion in the alpha-3 table.
The alpha-3 identifier in the ballot is the one currently used in draft ISO
639-3 (where "mir" is used for a different item).

addinfo = Mirandese is the second official language of Portugal, having been
given this status by the law 7/99, of january 1999. Mirandese is part of the
European Bureau for Less-Used Languages (EBLUL). Some more or less recent
and accurate information can be reached at the Euromosaic site:
http://www.uoc.edu/euromosaic/.
Mirandese is spoken in northeastern Portugal, in all the Miranda do Douro
District and part of the Vimioso, Mogadouro and Bragança disctricts. A low
estimated number of speakers is of about 12 000 to 15 000, being that it is
a hard number to calculate, as many of its most active speakers are among
big city communities.
Mirandese it thaught as an optional language up to the 5th grade of
secondary school. The Mirandese teaching programs have been approved by the
Portuguese Government. Hopefully, there will be a teacher formation course
at Universidade de Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) from next lective year
on.
Mirandese has a standardized Ortographic Convention (Convenção Ortográfica
da Língua Mirandesa - COLM) since 1999, widely accepted by all speakers. The
Ortographic Convention doesn't include any caracters that can't be supported
by either text processors or internet tools, as it was developed with
didactic preocupations, using strictly the same carachters of the Portuguese
ortography, because currently children attend both Portuguese and Mirandese
classes.
There has been one PhD and two MA thesis regarding Mirandese, of which, one
was written in Mirandese and presented in Universidad de Salamanca, with the
highest rating. There is a PhD thesis in Mirandese under preparation which
shall be concluded in 2004.
Two Mirandese-Portuguese diccionaries are currently under development, being
that one of them is going to be pre-released by internet next february and
the other one will hopefully be published in next summer. The number of
original literature books in Mirandese published since late 1999 is of about
15.
There are various translation publications, namely a Portuguese poetry
anthology, originaly selected and translated to Mirandese, that will be
released late this year.
The Mirandese-speaking villages street plates are written in both Portuguese
and Mirandese. There has been an increasing number of people and
institutions using written mirandese in its affairs, namely by local
politics (Mirandese was sporadicly used in the Portuguese Government
Chamber) and in the areas of administration, tourism, publicity, and others.
Mirandese is increasingly being written in computers and in the net.
