Network Bulletin No.04-50
Date: August 20, 2004
Subject: NLS Operations Alerts
Index term: Distribution List
On August 23, 2004, NLS will initiate a new type of electronic message addressed to all network library
staff who currently receive NLS Reports. NLS Operations Alerts will largely supplant Timely
Information Exchange (TIE) messages, which are now received by only one individual at each network
library.
TIE messages, originally created to communicate with and solicit information from the heads of network
libraries when time constraints precluded the use of other means of communication, became established
as a quick and reliable way for NLS to disseminate time-sensitive information. Operations Alerts will
convey the same kinds of information often concerning computer disruptions, changes in book and
magazine production, or distribution problems but will reach a larger body of network staff, who will be
able to take appropriate action expeditiously.
NLS will still maintain the smaller TIE list to send and collect managerial data as needed.
