Read this one, but don't remember humans regretting
their actions...

It was included in lithuanian translation of french
SciFi together with my first space opera that I loved
to tears: Francis Carsac "Ceux de nulle part"
(translated as "Aliens from nowhere"). Considering
that Soviet Union did not appreciate space operas
unless they pointed to victory of communism, this was
quite a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately the sequels
that I read about 20 years later were quite weak. :(
