At first I thought you might mean Huxley's _Brave New World_, but the
main character isn't set to kill anyone. He just observes a pretty
strange (for him) world. There is a caste system, though.
Then I considered _Logan's Run_, but the main character, whose job it
is, in fact, to kill people, doesn't rescue anyone. He just runs away
from his former coworkers when they come to ice him. And I don't
think he was born to that job, either.
So what about Dick's _Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep_? The main
character ends up not killing someone or other, and running off, but
I don't recall that the final target was a "child" or that they leave
on bicycles.
