Like most of the other posters, NLM believes that creating two distinct
headings for government-designated parks and forests is an undesirable idea.
It is an unnecessary distinction, and will be confusing to users and
catalogers.
Two alternative options are available. Expand the definition of types of
geographic entities that are established as 151 headings, but may be used as
110/710 in bibliographic records as needed (as proposed by John Myers).
Or, following the example of concentration camps, expand RI 24.1 to explain
that national parks and forests were established in either the name or
subject file prior to 2005 and tagged as X51, but should now be established
only in the names file and be tagged as 110. The existing headings can
then be adjusted on a case by case basis as needed in current cataloging (as
is done for concentration camps), or an effort can be made to locate all
existing headings of this type and convert them at once. This would avoid
the need for catalogers to continue to search both files for these headings
over the next few years. NLM believes this to be the most desirable option.
