Hello Greg,
Welcome to the MARC21 world.
Under MARC21, GMD is displayed to the public from 245$h, but this
subfield is
supposed to contain only terms from one of the two GMD lists in AACR 1.1C1.
Library automation systems usually pick up the more detailed information that
you describe from a variety of coded fields:
000/06 Type of record
007/01 Specific material designation
007/04 Videorecording format
008/23 Form
To get to the level that you specify in your examples, however, you
might have
to set your system to find some of your terms in a variety of note fields,
e.g.:
500 Physical description or 538 System requirements for: Compact disc
You might need to use 590 or a note field in a MARC21 holdings record (842?)
for 'pbk' and 'hbk' since that is not information that we usually enter in
bibliographic records (since both those formats can sometimes share the
same record).
Hope this helps,
Deborah
