God, I hate to get caught up in this rat hole, but here I go.
No, it is not meaningless. It is the trivial case for
clientSuppliedDefault=(a and b and userSuppliedIndex=c). The client
software just collected user terms to be anded together and then applied a
default index to the unqualified ones.
Yes, more complicated code could have be written to avoid this construct,
but one of the points for SRW was to lower the barriers to implementation.
The same is surely true for CQL.
