No, Ralph's time overhead is, if I properly understand, to do with
repeatedly setting up and tearing down the underlying TCP/IP
connection (and, as like as not, most of _that_ time is spend in
hostname lookup). The fix is to get, or write, a better HTTP GET
library.

I am sure this is true in all implementation that don't abuse the
network.
