Dear AFC Board:
Time is fast approaching for the March 24-25 Board Meeting.
Anticipating that time will fly by, you should contact Doris Craig at
202-707-1736 or [log in to unmask] to discuss your travel arrangements. Doris
can advise you and/or answer your travel-related questions. Please
consider making your plane reservations as soon as possible, as Friday
the 25th is Good Friday and might be a very busy travel day.
You should plan to fly in on Wednesday March 23rd. Dr. Tim Rice
(President of the Society for Ethnomusicology and a fellow AFC Board
member) will be giving a presentation at 6:30 pm on his fieldwork in
Bulgaia, collecting traditional music there. The presentation will be
in the Jefferson Building, in room 119.
We have a full day of activity and work planned for Thursday, March
24th, including a grand tour of our new office and Reading Room space.
Yes, after 27 years of being "temporary" in our spaces, the American
Folklife Center has a home!! Our new space is designed to be functional
for both registered researchers in our Reading Room and the casual
visitor. We have created shadow box exhibits in the hallway for the
increased number of tourists anticipated when the Capitol Visitor Center
opens. These exhibits describe the work of the AFC and also the VHP.
In addition, in the new AFC Reading Room we will have a
listening/computer station set up for visitors who wish to look up their
submission to the Veterans History Project, or to access our online
recordings. We are excited to be able to serve the public and visitors
to the Library in this new and expanded way.
The official Board meeting will be held the morning of Friday, March
25th, ending about 1 pm. No official activities are planned for after
our meeting, however, we are discussing a possible lecture/interview
with WPA folklorist and activist, Stetson Kennedy. The lecture would
follow our Board meeing in the early afternoon and you might wish to
stay, but those plans are not firm yet. A schedule and meeting agenda
will be coming your way next week.
Wishing you all the best, and looking forward to seeing you all in
