Dear JAC members,

Below please see a proposal that has been submitted for ISO 639-2 alpha-3
identifier. DISCUSSION, please (until 2005-02-25).

(This message is also sent to the submitter for information.)

The item is included in Ethnologue with identifier KCG, and taken over in
ISO 639-3 with the same identifier (kcg). The identifier of the proposal,
"tya" is unavailable. The names given in Ethnologue are: "Tyap, Katab,
Kataf". The reference name in 693-3 is "Tyap".

The item is included in Linguasphere as 98-IAG-be. The names listed are
"ka-tab, tab, a-tyap".

The proposal does not document formally the required number of bibliographic
units. The proposers may very well be adequately served by inclusion in ISO
639-3 (currently out for DIS ballot).

Håvard

addinfo = The documents in question are available from the Fantsuam
Foundation,
http://www.fantsuam.org, which is also the recommending institution for
Tyap. Tyap is a Nigerian language spoken in Kaduna State, Nigeria by about
130,000 (1993 SIL). The native speakers refer to the language as Tyap,
while outsiders call it Kataf.

The request for an individual code for Jju is being made by Fantsuam
Foundation at this time because an open source translation project called
Zitt (http://zitt.sourceforge.net) has commenced. The Fantsuam Foundation
has an active ICT program training local youth who speak the five languages
we intend to translate. In order for our work to be incorporated into
software such the GNOME desktop (the first piece of software we are
localizing), we have been asked by the GNOME development team to acquire
individual codes for each of the five
languages. In addition to localized open source software, our work will
also produce the following:

-Tyap glossary
-Tyap grammar
-online Tyap IT dictionary
-online Tyap-English IT dictionary
-online Tyap-English general dictionary
-website (http://zitt.sourceforge.net) in Tyap
-Jju translations of documentation associated with each localized software
-basic/introductory ICT training/how-to documents in Tyap -information on
the Atyap people and their land (as the information available online is
quite scanty and not in Tyap)

One of the reasons we are translating open source software into Tyap is to
encourage publishing, both on and offline, in Tyap. We intend to lead the
way, as demonstrated by the list above.

Zitt Open Source Translation Project draws nearly all of its members from
the ranks of Fantsuam's ICT students.
