Bytes 06 (material type) and 07 (bibliographic level) of the Leader indicate
the material type coding (of bytes 18-34) of the 008. The MARC 21
Bibliographic documentation on field 008 for each type of material describes
which codes determine 008/18-34 coding. The 006 field bytes 01-17 correspond
to 008/18-34, and 006/00 contains a code indicating the type of material,
which, aside from 's', appear to match Leader/06 codes.

I can't really speak much to this, since it depends on the system. I believe
some use 008 and 007 data for limiting searches (limit to a range of dates,
using the date1 and/or date 2 (008/07-10, /11-14), or perhaps for
determining the icon to display (using the 007, to display a videocassette
icon vs. DVD/disc icon). It would be nice if more systems would take
advantage of the 006-008 coding for searching/limiting searches.
I hope this helps,
