Initialization of names is quite variable in bibliographic formatting.
In one style you would get "R. W.", in another you'd get "R.W." and in
still another you'd get "R W". Really, bibliographic styles do mandate
rules for initalization.
And then there are those names (I guess T. S. Elliot?) where the
precise punctuation of the initials and such are, well, the name. I
don't see that it's "easy" to algorithmically determine the correct
formatting in all these cases.
There are ways around the problem in most cases, though. It's not my
primary concern here.
