HOURS:
Monday through Friday
8:45 A.M. - 5:30 P.M.

FUNCTIONS:  Under the supervision of the Head, Adaptive Services Division, the
incumbent provides special format reading materials including Braille books, Talking
Books, and emerging technology formats (such as the upcoming NLS Digital Talking
Book, and Web Braille); provides reader advisory and reference service to readers and
to persons interested in the NLS Talking Books Program, and about visual and physical
disabilities. Makes referrals to relevant outside agencies, as needed.  Plans strategies to
publicize the program, and organizes ongoing outreach efforts to interested and/or
underserved populations. Works with neighborhood library managers to provide
demonstration collections to increase public awareness throughout the City. Establishes
networking relationships with other NLS Regional Libraries, NLS Staff, and with librarians
in professional associations working in the field of services to persons with disabilities.
Compiles bibliographies and other finding aids to assist the readership to find reading
materials of interest. Maintains confidential reader records in accurate and current status
both in READS (the NLS Reader Enrollment And Delivery Service file) and in paper files,
with proper certification of eligibility and signatures kept in the paper files. Works with
readers by telephone, by email, and in-person. Keeps up with the field by attending
appropriate workshops, seminars and other employee training and by keeping abreast of
the literature in the field. In the absence of the head of the division may oversee the day-
to-day operations of the unit.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:  DS-9: A Master's Degree in Library Science is required.  DS-11: A
minimum of one year's experience at the DS-9 level in the 1410 Librarian series or
equivalent experience.  All applicants must present a combination of experience,
education, skills, self-development, and expertise that demonstrates the capacity to
perform the duties of the position.

KSA #1: Full professional knowledge of the wide range of theories, objectives, principles,
and techniques of librarianship, especially related to adaptive services.

KSA #2   Thorough knowledge of the LC/NLS Talking Books Program and their Braille
and recorded readings materials.

KSA #3:  Professional knowledge of electronic resources available through the Internet,
and other databases, including emerging technologies.

KSA #4:  Ability to work and communicate effectively with internal and external
customers including ability to communicate effectively at all levels orally and in writing.
