Title: Librarian 1 (Head, Youth Services)
Salary: Range R25 ($38,586.43-$66,785.95)
Location: Library for the Blind and Handicapped
Description:
Supports the mission of NJLBH by promoting reading and literacy for children and teens with various
handicaps preventing them from reading conventional print. Provides reader advisory and reference
services as well as programming in appropriate formats to customers ages 5-18, their families and
educators. Distributes information and publicity to parents, teachers, professional organizations,
school district personnel and other agencies, participating in conferences and conducting a variety of
outreach activities targeting these populations. Produces newsletters and writes articles,
advertisements, brochures, publicity and public education mailings. Plans and conducts age-appropriate
programs at NJLBH, such as the Summer Reading Club, as well as other events in co-sponsorship with
state and professional organizations. Develops bibliographies and collections, and maintains collection
database and computerized reader files. Reviews reader applications for completeness and compliance
with Federal certification guidelines. This position reports to the Assistant Director of the New Jersey
Library for the Blind and Handicapped.
Requirements:
Possession of or eligibility for a valid certificate as a professional librarian issued by Thomas Edison
State College.
Three year's experience providing professional library services appropriate to the duties of this position.
Experience working in an NLS network library or an organization serving the blind, or experience
working with blind or visually impaired youth, will be given strong consideration.
Knowledge of Spanish an asset. Knowledge of Deaf Culture, hard of hearing issues, and the ability to
communicate in American Sign Language an asset.
