TREATMENT OF TRIBAL ENTITIES RECOGNIZED BY THE U.S. GOVERNMENT AS 151 HEADINGS
FYI to NACO catalogers:
As a result of discussions with a new NACO participant (the National Indian Law Library) LC's Cataloging Policy and Support Office (CPSO) has determined that the appropriate MARC 21 field in name authority records for names of tribal entities recognized by the U.S. government as legal entities should be the 151 (Geographic name) field instead of the previously used 110 (Corporate name) field. In the next week or two, CPSO will be posting a memo to their Web site providing background, guidelines, and listing the source to search for verification of the form of name, etc. In the meantime the National Indian Law Library will begin to contribute new NARs with these headings and will begin to change the existing headings to conform to this new practice.
