I actually like it quite a bit.  I have never read Banks before and he does a pretty good job of building his universe, even though I at times found it hard to follow.  His characters are hit and miss.  The "bad guys" are a little bit of a caricature and most of the characters seemed a little poorly drawn.  But overall, it's a entertaining and a worthy Hugo nominee.
