Colleagues :
In Barbara Tillett's presentation at the OCLC FRBR Workshop
(http://www.oclc.org/research/events/frbr-workshop/program.htm ; scroll
down to Wednesday's itinerary and select Barbara's "FRBR and Cataloging
Rules" presentation) referenced in Sally's paper, I was especially
intrigued by "Scenario D."
In this scenario, the entire bibliographic format is removed from the
catalog/OPAC equation. The FRBR Work and Expression entities are
described with Authority records. Manifestations and Items are dealt
with via the MARC 21 HOldings format.
As a serials cataloger, such a model holds tremendous appeal for two
reasons: 1) much of the incessant catalog maintenance created by serial
title changes, and the change endemic within resources issued over time
could be handled within the authority file (incidently, the prospect of
handling serial title changes via authority records would represent a
huge step forward in terms of making library catalogs more
user-friendly); and, 2) many (perhaps all?) of the format variation
(MulVer) challenges represented by serials held within multiple formats
(e.g., back issues in microformat, some issues in print, current issues
online, etc.) at a single institution could be resolved via the Holdings
format. The other holdings eccentricities often associated with serials
for a given institution could also be described via holdings.
Obviously, such a change from current cataloging and OPAC configurations
would require substantial changes to the MARC 21 Holdings format (such
as the discussion paper MARBI recently considered from the Association
of Moving Image Archivists (2002-DP04) "Addition of Imprint and Physical
Description Fields to the MARC21 Holdings Format." Intellectual
forerunners of that Discussion Paper appeared as MARBI proposals 89-9
and 91-13).
I wonder if in our discussion of Sally's paper on Sunday, if we may also
consider the potential MARC 21 ramifications (and feasibility) of
pursuing Tillett's Scenario D?
thank you for any thoughts,
everett
