Please see the message exchange below with Ryan Chute from LANL. They had
some PREMIS questions. As noted, we will need to change the obligation of
relatedEventIdentification in both the data dictionary and the schema.

Congratulations. You are the first person to find what seems to be an
error. In looking at earlier versions of the data dictionary, it seems
that it was not intended that relatedEventIdentification should be
mandatory. We would expect it to occur when the type is derivation, but
not when it's structural. We will need to start an errata page and change
the schema.

In the examples, we tried to say "n/a" when it was a mandatory element
that was not applicable at that particular level (i.e. representation,
object, bitstream), but I'm sure that isn't altogether consistent. The
examples were really difficult and time consuming and we did the best we
could. We would not expect to use blanks for a mandatory element. Perhaps
this problem goes away with the explanation of relatedEventIdentification?

Our suggested values for relationshipType are:
structural
derivation

relationshipSubType is intended to further specify, but since you would
already said its relationshipType is derivative, this is redundant
information. We had in mind something like "forward migration" or
"normalization" or something that further specifies the type. If you don't
want to include anything more specific, then just use what you suggested,
since it is mandatory.

No obligation to use the container. It's just there if you want to package
it all together.

I looked quickly at it and it looked good-- interesting that you have a
format registry. Much better than encoding all that stuff of course. You
are working with the DCC on this?

I recommend that you subscribe to the PREMIS Implementors' Group list. We
want to use that to let people know about changes and for people to ask
questions and share implementation experiences. Send a message to
[log in to unmask] with text: subscribe premis firstname lastname.
