Yes, you'd request METS but currently you can't request any of the
sub-schemas.

Herbert van de Sompel's architecture also uses MPEG-21 DIDL rather than
METS, and it seems to be an equally valid option. Most of the people I
know use METS as it comes from the digital library world rather than
MPEG.
