Surely one important reason to go to vinyl was to decrease shipping costs.
I don't recall shellac futures being offered on the commodities exhange
where oil futures can be used to stabilize near-future costs. At least, it
used to work that way, when delivery was assured. A stable supply cost is
helpful in forcasting future earnings, and we all know the markets that
thrive on such information.
