is examing just what fields are being used.

The results from analysis of 400,000 MARC records conducted reported
that less than 50% of nearly 2,000 MARC21 fields andsubfields occurred
even once in records, and that only 36 of the fields and subfields
covered almost 80% of all use.

These findings might support a major simplification of MARC21 and use
of AACR2/RDA for less than full level cataloguing.
