The response to the call for volunteers to participate in the various
phases of the project to develop an access level record for serials was
most enthusiastic and most gratifying. Many thanks to all who indicated
their interest and support, especially those institutions who could support
travel for participation in the Working Group charged with proposing the
element set and cataloging guidelines. In addition to the co-chairs (Diane
Boehr, NLM, Regina Reynolds, LC) and the CONSER ex officio member (Hien
Nguyen, LC), the Working Group will consist of: William Anderson, LC;
Melissa Beck, UCLA; Edith Gewertz, New York Public; Carolyn Larson, LC;
Kristin Lindlan, University of Washington; Peter McCracken, Serials
Solutions; Vanessa Mitchell, R.R. Bowker; Tina Schrader, National
Agriculture Library; Steve Shadle, University of Washington; Diana
Snigorowitz, LC.
A number of individuals and institutions also volunteered to participate in
the Review Group that will work by email to provide input to the Working
Group in order to finalize the element set and cataloging guidelines. Some
of these same institutions, as well as others, volunteered to conduct pilot
projects at their institutions. After the Working Group has completed its
tasks (the target date in the charge is "no later than ALA Midwinter"), the
proposed element set and cataloging guidelines will be posted on a Web
page. Additional volunteers for the Review Group and for the pilot tests
will be considered at that time.
The Working Group will meet at the Library of Congress on October 18 and
again on November 10. Regina Reynolds will be away from the Library of
Congress from September 23 - Oct. 5. Comments and questions about the
project should be sent to both Diane Boehr ([log in to unmask]) and
Regina Reynolds ([log in to unmask])
