Hello Adam,
The NARs you are referencing are the result of a 1997 project with
the Dance Heritage Coalition
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/naco/danceinfo.html The NARs are all coded
008/33 "d" Preliminary mainly because these records were machine generated
(without human review) and it looks like the algorithm set-up to strip out
ending periods got a bit hinky.
According to DCM Z1 008/33 " ... PCC participants are expected to
routinely upgrade NARs coded preliminary when making other modifications to
the record." In the LC cataloging newsline, Vol. 5, no. 10, 1997 there is
an article on the project stating that "These records may be used, modified,
and upgraded according to normal LC/NACO procedures, without referral to or
consultation with the Dance Heritage Coalition." I will add that
information to the DHC Funnel project page so we won't forget again.
The answer to your questions are: 1) Add the periods as per usual when
citing a personal name with an initial and 2) do NOT in any case ever make a
heading "match" another heading in the LC/NACO authority file that is coded
preliminary; and 3) resist your inclinations to clean up the file unless
your library administrators approve.
Ana
