Don't Do That Then.
Explain is our servant, not our master. If stuffing the record with
38,000 indexes doesn't help, then don't do it: just add a
element and have done.
To say that we can't implement a MARC profile because the Explain
record would get too big would be cutting off our pancreas to spite

Would you prefer that people with MARC databases to search should
invent their own ad-hoc, proprietry, non-interoperable web-service
