Michele is correct in pointing out that a <did> cannot be inside another
<did> at the component level (or anywhere else). Ralph is making a common
mistake, however, in using a component (and the <did> within) just for the
container information. EAD privileges the intellectual order of the
materials over the physical. The boxes and folders, while important for
retrieval purposes, are simply an artifact of housing--they are not the
intellectual component levels. The individual documents are not components
of the boxes, they're components of the series. I suggest the following:
<c03>
<did>
<container>Box 3</container>
<physdesc>1box</physdesc>
<unittitle>Numerical chart</unittitle>
<physdesc>in pencil, red, blue, black, on graph paper; notes in red: Stan,
Please
change note card; Stan Please make P 2change</physdesc>
</did>
</c03>
I can't tell from the example what the <c02> level is between the series and
the documents, so can't take this any further.

Hi Ralph --
No, you're not overusing it :) The <did> is required content for all c0#
elements whether or not they have sub-c0# elements. (However, your example
shows the c04 inside the <did> for the c03, which is not legal EAD tagging
either.)
Wrong:
<c01>
<c02>
<did><unittitle>next level title</unittitle></did>
</c02>
</c01>
Right:
<c01>
<did><unittitle>first level title</unittitle></did>
<c02>
<did><unittitle>next level title</unittitle></did>
</c02>
</c01>
