One other comment re the proposed 25.13:
Under Bible, Catholic Church Liturgy ..., the instruction to "include the
name of the manuscript or its repository designation as part of the uniform
title heading for the work" is given; but the example of this kind of
qualifier, "Catholic Church. $t Psalter (Ms. Bamberger Psalter)" does not
match the "name of the manuscript," which is given in the same example as
"Bamberger Psalter." How to include the repository designation is also
unclear. Two alternatives:
Bible. $l Latin. $s Auct. E. Infra 1& 2 --hypothetical example
Bible. $l Latin. $s Bodleian Library. $k Manuscript. $n Auct. E. Infra 1 &
2. --n83182205
The LCRI wording could be misunderstood to call for the former, since the
distinction it makes between the "repository designation" and the
"designation in the repository" is one of those subtle ones that might fool
the unwary (e.g., me, until a moment ago). The latter pattern is more in
evidence in the NAF, and might better be conveyed by an instruction to use
"the repository designation heading" as qualifier, with an example like the
one above to illustrate the use of subfields as well.
Qualification of name/title headings in this area also shows practice that
varies from the Bamberger example, and from the repository designation
heading, e.g.:
Catholic Church. $t Psalter (Ms. Pierpont Morgan Library. G.19) --nr98031410
Catholic Church. $t Psalter (Mainz psalter) --nr97032907
Catholic Church. $t Psalter (Ms. Dagulf) --no2002026677, cf. hdg. "Dagulf
psalter", n81106372
Is the intent to let the cataloger formulate a qualifier freely? Is the
"Ms. ..." pattern in the example meant to be prescriptive? Is the full
repository designation heading meant to be used as the qualifier, or some
reformulation of it? If consistency is desired here, more specific
instructions are needed, as indicated by the variations already in the NAF.
Thanks for the opportunity to comment.
