First, I'd like to say I'm glad the practices for manuscript headings
are finally being written down. I do a lot of these and have pretty much
had to pick up a lot of it by osmosis :-)
So I have the following question. My experience shows that these records
usually have reciprocal 5XXs between the work heading and the manuscript
heading. This is very helpful to catalogers and users alike. But this
practice is not mentioned in the first part of the LCRI, nor are any
examples given.
The only mention is the very last line of the LCRI, under "Bible,
Catholic Church Liturgy, etc., Manuscripts," where we are instructed NOT
to relate the headings. By implication, I suppose, then, we are to
relate other types of manuscript headings to the corresponding work
headings with see also references. I suggest this be made explicit in
the first part of the LCRI.
It also might be useful to explain in the last section why LC doesn't
want us to relate the Bible, etc., headings to their ms. headings. I
can't quite understand why these useful references would not be made.
Thanks,
Bob
