Happy New Year!
Ho, ho, ho!
He, he, he! and
Hi, hi, hi!
The new year has begun and the upcoming ALA Mid-Winter meeting 2006 is cause to distribute a new "What's New with the PCC". Please make note of the following items:
With the implementation of Unicode in LC's database, the placement of diacritics within SACO proposals has undergone revision. Please make certain that diacritics are placed following the letter over which they are to appear. Further documentation is available at the SACO Frequently-Aasked-Questions page at:
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/saco/sacofaq.html . In addition, CPSO has sent a message regarding the issue with the distribution of "delete" records; please look in your mail for this important announcement.
The PCC Calendar has been updated to reflect current room assignments for the upcoming ALA-Midwinter meeting. Please confer with the calendar at: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/calendar.html to make sure that you have your PCC dance card filled.
For SCA members: the Standing Committee on Automation closed meeting has been moved to a new time slot. Please check the PCC calendar and make note of the change.
The Basic SACO Workshop at ALA Mid-Winter is advertised at: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/saco/sacowkshop2006m.html and the Workshop registration form is available as a link at: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/saco/sacoreg06m.html . Please make sure you are registered if interested in attending. The deadline for registering has been extended through Friday, January 13, 2006.
The PCC and the SACO Coordinator would like to publicly acknowledge those PCC participants who volunteered to become SACO Mentors, who underwent training to assist with the processing of new SACO proposals and who will serve as mentors for institutional participants that have applied for SACO membership. Further news about the SACO Mentors is available at: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/saco/SACOMentors.html
Paul Frank and John N. Mitchell will be conducting an LC Classification workshop scheduled for May 2006. The online registration form is available at: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/saco/lccwkshopMay06.html. Please indicate your interest as soon as possible.
The NACO Class for February 2006 is now full; however, information about the workshop remains available at:
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/naco/instappl.html . Participants are encouraged to express interest, however, no further participants are being accepted for this session.
With the conversion of SACO to a membership-based component program of the PCC, expansion of SACO membership has continually increased. Currently many new PCC members are now SACO-Only participants and accordingly, a Web page has been developed to reflect those SACO-Only members at:
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/saco/SACO_Members.html . Please welcome these new members into the overarching PCC famliy.
The Cataloging Policy and Support Office has determined that names of Indian tribes recognized by the U.S. government as legal entities will henceforth be tagged 151 (Geographic name) in name authority records rather than 110 (Corporate name), as they were previously tagged. For a thorough report on this change, please visit: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/tribes.html
The inaugural meeting of SACO-At-Large will take place during the ALA MidWinter meeting in San Antonio. The full agenda can be found at: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/saco/SACO-At-Large06m.html . This meeting is intended to be more than a mere reporting session, but should elicit discussion, particularly for the new SACO-Only members.
As always, please confirm the liaison contact information and report any changes directly to the PCC Webmaster, John N. Mitchell at [log in to unmask] Be particularly mindful of changes in area codes, new fax numbers, and contact email information.
The PCC and the Cooperative Cataloging Team also appreciate the support during the past calendar year; it is our hope that we can be as receptive to the needs of our members during the upcoming year.
Yours truly,
John N. Mitchell
