I cant vouch for the Marantz CF recorder mic pres, but the ones in their old
analog portables were quite terrible. The Sound Devices are quite good - not
up to the level of top of the line stand alones, but top notch for a built in
pre. One thing worth mentioning about the 722 and 744 is that they can record
redundantly to CF and the internal HD simultaneously-=
