Jordan,
To elaborate on what Michael Fox wrote, you need to answer several
questions before 'getting it to work'. Are you linking to digital
objects at the component level? If so, will you encode the <dao> in
the <did> or after the <did>? Will you be linking to digital objects
elsewhere in the collection, say as an illustration in your
<bioghist>? Will you be using the <dao> element or will you use the
<daogrp> element as the RLG best practice guidelines recommend? What
kind of link are you creating, a link that inserts an image into the
finding aid, a text link to the image, or a thumbnail image that
links to a larger version? Once you nail down exactly what the
function of your <dao>s will be, then you'll be able to identify how
best to encode them and then to articulate how exactly your
stylesheet needs to treat them. You can find a good model for
<daogrp> encoding in the RLG BPGs
(http://www.rlg.org/en/page.php?Page_ID=450), as well as in the NWDA
BPGs (http://nwda.wsulibs.wsu.edu/intro.htm) and the NC EAD BPGs
(http://www.ncecho.org/ncead/ead2002.htm). There are variations to
each, but all recommend using <daogrp> rather than <dao>, in order to
standardize practice.
Good luck,
Mike Rush
