Dear EAD listserve,
I am processing a sound collection that was originally recorded on
VHS. Subsequent to the acquisition of the collection, the previous
archive manager arranged the archive by "event" rather than the
actual, original accession (which would be the VHS tape).
As a result, the original VHS tape holds two to four "events," while
subsequent digital surrogates have been divided into separate unique
events. I have assigned an accession number to the events that stem
from the original VHS tape, thus the accession number for the first
event on tape 5 wold be "5a." In fact, for the prospective end-users
of our collection, event is more important than the actual, original
"tape."
Since I am processing the collection by event rather than tape, I am
wondering if I should place all formats, original and digital
surrogates, into <physdesc> for each unique event in the <c> level,
is this a sound endeavor? Or should I rather separate all the various
formats into different <cOx> series?
Thanks for your thoughts,
Farris
