Note that this hasn't always been the case in jazz! During much
of its existence, jazz players used other people's compositions
(just as did virtually all pop artists), which they improvised
over. In fact, once "be-bop" became the standard jazz mode,
many of the performers' "compositions" were simply improvisation
based on various pop tunes!
