Ladies and Gentlemen
I'm having a problem I'm hoping you can help me solve. I was taught in my cataloguing classes in library school that the author's name comes from the title page of a book (when entering information into the card catalog). In the system that I'm now using, after I enter authors, titles, subject headings, I have to go to the system's authority control to verify the headings. Many times, what I have from the title page isn't what's in the authority control. How do I tell what's correct? For example let's use K.A. Applegate. On the title page of every Animorphs book, the author's name is K. A. Applegate. The authority control lists her (I didn't know it was a "her') as Applegate, K. (Kathryn) A. (Alice) . How am I supposed to know that K.A. Applegate is the name person as Kathryn Alice Applegate? That was an easy one. What about David Wilson? My authority control gives me Wilson, David Henry, 1937-. I can't tell if my David Wilson is David Henry Wilson. I check the LoC authority control but I can't begin to tell you how many David Wilsons (with or without a middle name, with or without birth/death dates) are listed! How do I choose what's right? Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your help.
