Quoting Rachel Wadham
"It is now up to us to decide if the PCC will die or if it will be
a vital force into the future. I hope that more discussions will
take
place and that the PCC will make an informed decision."
As others have noted, the PCC leadership has always been about
doing cataloging 'faster, cheaper, etc.' I have felt tension
between these 'goals' and the training that is offered by PCC. As a
NACO trainer and as a trainer for the Basic LCSH course I have been
'angry' after recent PCC meetings at ALA where we were told that
our work was pretty much 'useless' in today's Google environment.
Like others that have commented, I think there is value in what I
do to organize information and am not yet ready to turn it over to
Google and walk out the door. But the message that I heard at a PCC
meeting recently was that we should let Google 'do it'. I agree
with Rachel that the PCC is at a critical point.
As a NACO trainer, I am discouraged and feel betrayed by the recent
LC decision that did not involve others. People have worked hard to
develop training and to conduct it under the PCC umbrella. Serious
discussion about the continued training efforts needs to 'happen'
ASAP.
