Dear Melodie and Other Interested Colleagues:
I teach a somewhat similar course at Dominican University called "Organization of Knowledge" that, I suspect, has many of the components you teach in your course including a large section on AACR2. As part of that, we've talked about some of the history of cataloging, specifically Panizzi's, Cutter's Jewett's, Ranganathan's and Lubetski's contributions that led up to AACR2.
Following the AACR2 component, we talk about FRBR and how it is very much a continuum of previous concepts of a catalog and how, with relational databases, we are now truly able to realize many of the concepts those leaders were trying to convey but didn't have the technology to do so. I use Voltaire's Candide as my FRBR example, tracing the relationship from Voltaire to Shaw to Leonard Bernstein.
After that, we talk about where cataloging is going as a result of having a number of other players who are also quite involved with providing ways to create metadata -- museums and archiving communities, publishers, search engines like Google and Yahoo. Following this, we cover what's going on with the development of RDA, why the Joint Steering Committee and the Committee of Principals decided on the course they did and what will be different in RDA from AACR2, recognizing the RDA is still in a work in progress. For some reading, I direct them to the RDA home page and the FAQs in particular.
Underlying this, is an explanation of how the RDA creation process is done; that it goes beyond the United States and, based on the number of translations of AACR2 into other languages, the Anglo-speaking community. Also important, I think, is explaining that the JSC is developing RDA so that there will be greater compatibility with other metadata communities in order to facilitate the sharing of records.
