CATALOG LIBRARIAN - ORIGINAL SERIAL AND MONOGRAPH CATALOGING
BURKE LIBRARY
The Columbia University Libraries seek a cataloger with strong cataloging
and classification skills to provide original cataloging primarily for
rare and archival titles in the Union Theological (UTS) collection. The
Burke Library, which is the largest theological library in the western
hemisphere, contains rich collections for theological study and research.
With holdings of over 700,000 items, the Library is recognized as one of
the premier libraries in its field and includes extensive holdings of
unique and special materials.
Reporting to the Head of Original Serial and Monograph Cataloging the
incumbent will:
* Provide full (or other appropriate level) original cataloging for titles
in the UTS collection in a variety of languages and formats.
* Coordinate cataloging and non-cataloging projects as assigned and
perform catalog maintenance on UTS records in CLIO, resolving problems and
inconsistencies in bibliographic and holdings records.
The Libraries participate in BIBCO, CONSER, NACO and SACO. Catalogers
contribute to planning, policy and procedure development and are expected
to keep abreast of methods, guidelines and approaches for the
bibliographic control of library materials. Columbia~Rs extensive digital
library activities provide many opportunities for catalogers to work in
non-traditional ways with colleagues in special collections, academic
computing, Electronic Publishing Initiative at Columbia (EPIC) and the
Center for New Media Teaching and Learning.
Requirements are: accredited MLS or equivalent education and experience;
working knowledge of cataloging principles and procedures including:
AACR2R, LC subject headings and classification and MARC 21 formats;
experience cataloging rare books and/or other special collections material
using Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Books; strong working knowledge of
Latin and one or more western European languages (German preferred).
Additional requirements include: effective verbal and written
communication skills; good organizational skills; an aptitude for complex,
analytical, and detailed work and demonstrated awareness of new and
emerging standards and technologies relevant to bibliographic control and
metadata, and a commitment to their effective application. Highly
desirable qualifications include understanding of the role of digital
technology in special collections, experience with Voyager and OCLC;
experience in a large research library; subject background in theology.
