Morgan

There is no actual METS file for the item as yet, but it is proposed
that the METS file would look like the text file I attached to my
previous message. I fixed a few minor errors so I'm attaching it again.

As I said it is very much a draft and will continue to be developed, and
influenced by what other people are doing. We haven't tested it
ourselves yet but when we do we can let people know where to find the
test files.

We weren't really ready to publicise it but since it was raised on the
PIG list and Rebecca called for discussion we thought it was timely to
show people what we are thinking.

Bronwyn,

Can you point us to the METS file for the item?

Thanks,
Morgan Cundiff

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!-- edited with XMLSpy v2005 rel. 3 U (http://www.altova.com) by Bronwyn Lee (National Library of Australia) --> <!--Prepared by Bronwyn Lee, National Library of Australia, May 2006. This is an example to illustrate the proposed METS profile for the APSR (Australian Partnership for Sustainable Repositories) preservation metadata project. The purpose this profile addresses is use of METS document to transfer custody of a digital object or set of digital objects from one repository to another. It should therefore contain all the metadata available for an object to facilitate long term preservation and access. The profile is not specific to a particular system or implementation. Repositories will need to map their implementation specific requirements or profile to this common one. This example is a digitised piece of sheet music consisting of a front cover, two pages and a back cover. There are three representations:an archival 'master' copy consisting of four TIFF files, a display or 'access' copy consisting of four JPEG files and a 'print' copy consisting of a single PDF file which was created from the access copies. The data is taken from the National Library's Digital Collections Manager (DCM) system. DCM also has lower resolution view copies and thumbnails (JPEG files) of each page but these have been omitted from this example. --> <mets xmlns="http://www.loc.gov/METS/" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:marc="http://www.loc.gov/MARC21/slim" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:premisObject="http://www.loc.gov/standards/premis/v1" xmlns:premisEvent="http://www.loc.gov/standards/premis/v1" xmlns:premisAgent="http://www.loc.gov/standards/premis/v1" xmlns:mix="http://www.loc.gov/mix/" xmlns:mods="http://www.loc.gov/mods/v3" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.loc.gov/METS/ http://www.loc.gov/standards/mets/mets.xsd http://www.loc.gov/MARC21/slim http://www.loc.gov/standards/marcxml/schema/MARC21slim.xsd http://www.loc.gov/standards/premis/v1 http://www.loc.gov/standards/premis/v1/PREMIS-v1-1.xsd " PROFILE="National Library of Australia draft METS SIP Profile 1.0" OBJID="nla.mus-an5631356"> <!--MODS schema is not referenced because when METS and MODS schemas are used together there is a namespace conflict (same namespace, xlink, but schema in two different places, won't validate). The access copies are linked to the master copy through a PREMIS relationship ('is derivative of'). The print copy is linked to the access copies from which it was derived. In this example there is no sourceMD because the source of the master is the physical original, covered in dmdSec, and the source of the access copies is the master, covered in the master's amdSec. Although the National Library of Australia's DCM system records the derivation of the access and print copies as events, digiprovMD for these events has not been included because they are not as important as the master copy and because relevant metadata is included in PREMIS creatingApplication and MIX ImageCreation.
