Stephen Prine has been appointed assistant chief of the NLS Network Division.
Mr. Prine has held progressively responsible positions at NLS over the past twenty-three
years and has been head of the Network Services Section since 1992. Before that he
served as an NLS network consultant for nearly a decade. Mr. Prine was a participant in
the prestigious Library of Congress Intern Program during the 1986 1987 term. Before
coming to NLS, he was the South Carolina regional librarian from 1980 to 1983 and
director of the Multistate Center South from 1974 to 1980.
Mr. Prine holds an MLS from Florida State University and has been an active member
of the American Library Association (ALA) for the past thirty years. He is currently a
director of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA)
board. In 2002 he received both the ASCLA Leadership Achievement Award and the
ASCLA Service Award. Mr. Prine has been the NLS representative to ALA for the past
decade, and was the NLS liaison and contract monitor for the 1995 and 2005 editions of
Revised Standards and Guidelines of Service for the Library of Congress Network of
Libraries for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, published by ALA.
He has a comprehensive understanding of NLS and the network of cooperating libraries.
He has devoted his entire career to this special library service.
Mr. Prine will also continue as head of the Network Services Section in the near term.
It is expected that this position will be filled in the new fiscal year.
