Stephen Baxter's Mammoth trilogy, maybe? It came out, I think, when my kids
were a bit older than 8, so they read them when they were older. I don't
remember anything objectionable, but I also don't remember what the reading
level is. It's not about dinosaurs, but my kids liked mammoths and other
ice age-type stories at the same time they were into dinosaurs, so it might
interest him.
