Duties:
Provide library services to approximately 1/3 of the Talking Book Library (TBL) patrons by phone, others
by e-mail as well as some in person (walk-ins). This position selects books, updates patron database, and
performs book/author searches for patrons; implements and manages database upgrades; performs ongoing
troubleshooting of automated system and database; processes new patron applications; adds new patron
information into database; performs or supervises daily duplication of library materials; processes locally
recorded magazines; updates serials information in automated database; performs fill-in duties in the State
Library mail room and TBL circulation, when necessary; and other duties as assigned.

Competencies:
Considerable knowledge of general library practices and procedures; working knowledge of computers,
software, local area networks, Unix, and library automated database (KLAS); assistive technology software
for the visually and physically disabled; office practices and procedures; and supervisory techniques as applied
to volunteers. Enjoys helping others to read, knowledge of a wide range of book subject matters and
listening skills.

Ability to operate various types of equipment including multi-line telephone, burster, networks, printers,
duplicators, cassette machines, rewinders, typewriters, tape drive backup units, uninterruptible power
supply, and servers; search and research automated collection database; perform reference searches; organize
and maintain files; accurately follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively both verbally and
in writing; work effectively under pressure; and multi-task.

Education/Experience:
The above knowledge, skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and
experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and/or one to two years of post high school education and three
years of experience in library related work, or one year of advanced training in Library Science or a closely
related field.

Selection procedures used to evaluate an applicant's qualifications may include an evaluation of the State of
Montana application and any required supplemental material, a structured oral interview including a
performance examination, and reference checks. Applicants will be notified when screening has been

Benefits:
State employees working at least half-time are also provided paid health, dental, vision, and life insurance.

In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the person selected must produce within three

documentation include a birth certificate or social security card along with a driver's license or other picture
I.D., a U.S. passport or a green card.

Supplemental Questions:

1. This position requires maintaining our library automated database system, as well as, training patrons on
the use of adaptive technology software and hardware. What experience do you have in using an automated
library database, as well as using and training patrons on the use of adaptive technology software and
hardware? Give examples of your work with automated database systems.

2. What prior positions have you held and experiences you have had that reflect your interactions with
blind, low vision, physically and/or reading handicapped individuals? Give specific examples of how you
handled unique situations with individuals as described above.
   
3. The majority of our service to patrons (90%) is done over the telephone. What experiences have you
had serving the public by phone?

4. How would you answer the following patron requests:

A. Name five authors that are classic writers of American literature. Why did you select them?

B. Name five genres of fiction books and three authors in each of these genres.
