Collection Development Section
NLS has appointed Edmund O'Reilly as acting head of CDS, following the
retirement of James Herndon after more than thirty-eight years of federal
government service--twenty-one as NLS's first foreign language librarian and seven
as the NLS Collection Development Section (CDS) head.
Mr. O'Reilly has held progressively responsible positions at NLS during the past six
years and has been assistant head of the Publications and Media Section (PMS)
since 2005. In that position, Mr. O'Reilly oversaw publishing operations and
managed and coordinated the scheduling and production of print, braille, recorded,
and computer diskette publications. Prior to his appointment as assistant head, Mr.
O'Reilly was a writer/editor and then senior writer/editor in PMS. He also held
positions with the BBC Worldwide/Broadcasting Dataservices in London, England,
and with Smithsonian/Folkways Recordings at the Smithsonian Institution in
Washington, D.C.
Mr. O'Reilly holds a PhD in Folklore and Folklife from the University of
Pennsylvania and has an MA in English Literature from the State University of New
York at Buffalo. As the acting head of CDS, he will oversee the selection and
acquisition of materials for NLS collections, working closely with the Collection
Development Advisory Group, the acting chief of the Materials Development
Division, and the NLS selection librarians. During Mr. O'Reilly's nine-month
temporary appointment, the head of CDS position will be posted and widely
competed.
