NLS Operations Alert
DATE : February 20, 2007
TO : Network Libraries
FROM : Michael Martys
Automation Officer, NLS/BPH
SUBJECT: NLS outreach web site
NLS has assumed responsibility for maintaining the "Talking Books: Find Out More"
online referral system (www.nlstalkingbooks.org), through which visitors may request
further information on the talking-book program. Currently network libraries are notified
when an individual from their service area completes the form. NLS plans to test and
implement new procedures for providing this information.
__Web Page Test---February 22-28, 2007__
Beginning Thursday, February 22, 2007, Michael Martys, NLS automation officer, will be
testing the "Talking Books: Find Out More" form submission procedures. As the test
requires the assistance of each regional library, Mr. Martys will notify each library prior
to conducting the test.
Each regional library contact will need to verify receipt of five test e-mail messages (four
typical patron-request messages and one weekly summary) generated by the web page
(see the sample patron-request message at the end of this missive).
__Change in procedures__
Upon completion of the test, the following changes will be implemented:
1. Libraries will no longer need to log in to www.nlstalkingbooks.org to retrieve
information. Complete information about a person interested in the talking-book program will be
e-mailed directly to all currently listed library contacts.
2. E-mail messages will be sent directly to library contacts as soon as the person
interested in the talking-book program completes the form.
3. Each e-mail message will be numbered consecutively so that libraries can track
messages that they receive.
4. A weekly summary e-mail message listing all the completed forms sent to each
library during that week will be sent to each library contact. This message will be
sent even if no information was entered for a library during that week.
Please keep your e-mail address current. E-mail changes to [log in to unmask] Be
sure to note "Change outreach e-mail contact" in the subject line.
We hope that this change will make it easier for libraries to contact potential
patrons. Thank you for your assistance.
