I agree with the comment that it might be valuable for PreservationLevel
to contain an element to record the date/time when the decision was made
regarding the preservation level assigned for an object. I also agree
that it might be valuable for PreservationLevel to contain an element to
store the rationale or justification for making such a decision.
Furthermore, it might be valuable for PreservationLevel to contain an
element to store information on the authority that made the decision so
that the context for prior decisions regarding an object can be recorded.
Please find examples of scenarios, below, that use these elements:
On 20050201, the Repository Board decides to assign the preservation
level, preserve and maintain content in supported formats, to object A .
The justification is to enable analysis by the public.
The repository is reorganized, adopts new policies, and the authority
for assigning preservation level to objects is given to the digital
library acquisitions committee.
On 20150201, the digital library acquisitions committee reviews object A
and decides to assign the preservation level, preserve existing formats.
The justification is 0 accesses in last 5 years.
Thanks,
Bob Downs
