The Space Telescope Science Institute, located on the Johns Hopkins
University Campus in Baltimore, Md., is seeking a resourceful Assistant
Librarian to provide essential information and resources for research,
special projects, and the ongoing work of the Institute as well as the
wider astronomical community. Duties and responsibilities of the
Assistant Librarian include:
* Collect, provide, and maintain needed information in print and
non-print formats for scientific, technical, and support staff.
* Update, change, and maintain the ST ScI Library web pages on an
on-going basis.
* Use OCLC Connexion and SIRSI’s Unicorn ILS, perform original and
copy cataloging of print and online materials using the Library of
Congress (LC) classification scheme and subject headings.
* Perform routine and special database maintenance in the online
catalog as well as system upgrades as needed.
* Maintain vendor relationships with the Federal Library Network
(FEDLINK) and monitoring invoices for cataloging.
* Assist staff and visitors locating needed resources. Managing the
library’s diverse collection of journals, conference proceedings,
monographs, and reference materials.
* Working with technician in overseeing maintenance of the journal
and observatory publications collections, including bindery operations
* Filling in for Chief Institute Librarian and Library Technician in
their absence.
*_Education/ Experience:_*
An ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library Science and a minimum of 2
years experience, preferably in a science library, is required;
equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Thorough and demonstrated knowledge of OCLC, Library of Congress Rule
Interpretations, Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, and MARC21 formats
required. Knowledge of astronomical materials and resources is
desirable. Computer skills applicable to working in a PC environment,
including knowledge of the Internet, word processing, database
management, spreadsheet, and specialized library software knowledge are
required. Experience with Dreamweaver or comparable web-editing software
preferred. Experience with SIRSI’s Unicorn or similar ILS software
required. System management experience helpful.
